The University of Milan is the only Italian university to have established a Centre of Excellence dedicated exclusively to the development of mountain areas through specific training, research and third missions, entirely carried out and coordinated in the mountains. The UNIMONT centre is, in fact, located in Edolo, a small mountain town in High Valle Camonica, in the heart of the central Alps, and is the Campus of the Undergraduate Course in “Development and Protection of the Mountain Environment” and of the Research Centre for the Sustainable Management and Protection of Mountain Areas Ge.S.Di.Mont.

The training approach developed by UNIMONT to make a peripheral base an advantage and not a limit, is recognized as an effective model for the dissemination of information and scientific knowledge regarding mountain areas, as well as for the promotion of practical opportunities for young people who want to live and work in these territories. Today, the Edolo centre is a lively “platform” for the development of mountain areas, attracting students and researchers from all over Italy, who choose to live and work in the mountains facing the challenges of change towards sustainability.

In the episode of Linea Bianca, broadcast on Saturday 15th January, Magda and Damiano, respectively a student and graduate in “Development and Protection of the Mountain Environment” at the Edolo Campus of the University of Milan, talk about their experience and the reasons that guided their decision to undertake a unique training course on strategic issues for mountain areas. During the years of the degree course, UNIMONT undergraduates have the opportunity to acquire the tools and methods suitable to approach mountain issues, create innovation and make these territories competitive, with the aim of guaranteeing a future in mountain areas.
