TREE:HERO – Project updates

Despite the difficulties linked to the Covid19 emergency, the researchers of the TREE: HERO project have continued their research activities by analyzing the data collected last autumn in the Valcamonica and Valseriana woods.

The surveys made in chestnut groves, beech forests and spruce protection areas provided data necessary for the evaluation of root reinforcement. These results were illustrated at the international meeting of the European Union assembly on Geosciences (EGU).

The event usually held in Vienna, was organized online by asking the speakers to produce material in an open access format that can be downloaded for free here.

The interventions related to the TREE: HERO project were:

  • Extrapolating a spatially explicit tree root reinforcement model with field and LiDAR-derived stand data” (session BG3.16, with 80 connected participants). Dr. Edoardo Alterio (University of Padua) emphasized the possibility of using the raw Lidar data available on portions of the mountain territory to assess the risk of stability including the contribution of forest cover at the particle scale.
  • Towards a probabilistic assessment of sediment yields in a mountainous area: the case study of Valle Camonica” (session NH3.4, with 70 participants in connection). In the report, Dr. Paolo Sala (University of Milan) adopted a consolidated large-scale procedure to evaluate the ability of the small basins of the Oglio river tributaries to produce sediment and woody material.
  • Land cover dynamics and geomorphic processes in hillslope environments: from data acquisition to modeling and management practices” (session GM4.3, with 65 participants in connection). Dr. Alessio Cislaghi (University of Milan) moderated the session, addressing the issues related to the planning of silvicultural works and the impact on the frequency of surface landslides and damage from rock falls.
