What are today’s main challenges and prospects for the sustainable development of mountain areas? The articles in this issue of Mountain Research and Development provide a broad and multifaceted perspective: they examine how Andean pastoral livelihoods adapt through temporary labor migration; introduce and assess mountain–lowland interface areas as a new category of spatial planning in the European Alps; propose sustainability principles for trail running in Romania; explore the impact of climate change on off-piste skiing in France and possible adaptation strategies; and, finally, review 30 years of the Alpine conference ForumAlpinum, highlighting its role in scientific cooperation and sustainable development in the Alps and beyond.
