The seminar provides an overview of the various aspects of the cultivation (historical and current) of corn in the Lombardy mountains. In particular, it will deal with local and traditional varieties of corn grown in the mountains, including those listed in the National Register of Conservation Varieties (Spinato di Gandino Corn, Rostrato Rosso di Rovetta Corn, Nero Spinoso Corn), still cultivated in small local settings.
In addition to the traditional agronomic practices used in the past, and also nowadays, to grow these cultivars, some agro-food products derived from them will be presented, paying particular attention to their historical-cultural and nutritional value. Some of the activities carried out by UNIMONT for the recovery and cultivation of some of these cultivars will also be presented, highlighting the useful role of collaboration between farms and universities.
The seminar is aimed primarily at potential farmers interested in the cultivation of traditional and local Lombardy cultivars, as well as all those who wish to create new small production chains based on these cultivars.
