During the conference, the main characteristics of the hazelnut and its cultivation will be illustrated, with the objective of inserting it in a multifunctional agricultural context linked to marginal areas of Lombardy. The hazelnut, given its characteristics of hardiness and adaptability, can represent an opportunity to increase the income of farms in the Lombardy mountains and beyond. First, the environmental conditions in which this species is cultivated will be examined, analyzing production management, the varieties that are grown in Lombardy and in Italy and cultivation techniques (traditional and innovative) used nowadays. Special attention will be paid both to products which can be obtained from processing the nuts and the use of crop waste. Finally, the costs involved in creating a new orchard and production yields of traditional varieties grown in Lombardy and Italy will be examined. The conference is aimed primarily at farmers potentially interested in the cultivation of traditional and local Lombardy cultivars, as well as all those who intend to create new small production chains based on such cultivars.
