The seminar will focus on the possible uses of historical cadastral documentation through an illustration of the instrument, seen in the development of the use of technical cartography, and some case studies experimented in Valle Camonica. The use of historical land registers has now become common practice for the study of the territory: they constitute a real geographic information system, which relates cartography (often the oldest available today) with a rich descriptive apparatus of territorial objects. The implementation of a consultation tool (www.catastistorici.it) that provides webGIS access to information will also be presented.
