Citizen Science is a method that actively involves the public in scientific research.
As part of the Life project “Monitoring of insects with public participation” of the National Forest Biodiversity Study and Conservation Center “Bosco Fontana” Carabinieri, this approach was applied for the first time to investigate the distribution of 9 insect species protected by the Habitat Directive: 2185 valid reports were collected from 2013 to 2017. Encouraged by this success, the Center launched the InNat project (www.innat.it), which increases the collection of reports to 30 species. In addition, the Citizen Science InNat portal has been adopted by the Lombardy Region within the Life Gestire 2020 project to increase knowledge on these protected insects.
The Habitat Directive, some of the target species included in the Citizen Science program, the InNat platform and the first scientific results will be explained during the conference. In addition, Citizen Science’s 6 years of experiences will be shared.
