On Saturday, February 21, Professor Anna Giorgi, Head of the UNIMONT Hub at the University of Milan, spoke on Radio 24 during the program “L’Economia delle Piccole Cose” (The Economy of Small Things). The interview explored the relationship between major events, mountain territories, and economic development, particularly in light of Milano Cortina 2026.
During the interview, it emerged that being a mountain region is not necessarily a disadvantage: if supported by targeted interventions and policies consistent with its specific needs, the mountains can become an engine for development. Despite the phenomenon of depopulation, there are growing realities that prove how investing in human capital and local entrepreneurship can make a significant difference.
A central theme was also the definition of “mountain” itself: criteria that are too broad risk providing an inaccurate picture and dispersing resources. Correctly identifying mountain territories is essential to ensuring adequate tools, opportunities for young people, and truly effective strategies.
