The meeting dedicated to the ITALIAE Project, promoted by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers – Department for Regional Affairs and Autonomies (DARA) in support of local governance was held at the UNIMONT Centre– Centre of Excellence of the University of Milan located in Edolo (BS), on Tuesday 16th July.
Strengthening of local governance and development of mountain areas: these were the central themes of the meeting, held at the UNIMONT Centre, organized to present the ITALIAE Project, the purpose of which is to activate and promote moments of confrontation and interaction between administrators and stakeholders of mountain areas in order to trigger a specific intervention strategy and support for local governance.
The first Lombardy meeting of the ITALIAE Project, promoted by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers – DARA and funded under the PON Governance Institutional Capacity 2014-2020, took place in the heart of the central Alps, at the UNIMONT centre, a centre of excellence of the University of Milan in Edolo (Bs) which carries out continuous networking activity and interaction with actors and stakeholders at all levels. A meeting held in the mountains and for the mountains by national and regional bodies, demonstrating that the use of a methodological approach that can lead to lasting results thanks to direct contact with the territory and its needs.
The meeting was, as highlighted by Anna Giorgi, coordinator of the Ge.S.Di.Mont. Research Center – Unimont, University of Milan, an opportunity to start a debate and focalize on the criticalities that those who work in and administer municipalities and mountain territories encounter daily. The presence of numerous stakeholders at the Edolo centre in fact helped to provide a clear picture of the current situation and the most important critical factors, such as depopulation, abandonment and aging of the population. Daily criticalities that require innovative solutions, a place-based approach and collaboration between local, regional and national bodies, as emphasized by Nicola Pasini, Department of Social and Political Sciences, University of Milan and member of the Ge.S.Di.Mont. Research Center.
Local administrators, as actors capable of proposing innovative models for the development of mountain areas, are at the centre of the work promoted by DARA, as highlighted by Francesco Tufarelli – Coordinator of the Office for urban and mountain policies, institutional modernization and and the international activity of regional and local autonomies – Presidency of the Council of Ministers, DARA. The ITALIAE Project will activate a lasting collaboration and capacity building path, supported both at a national level, as explained by Francesco Minchillo, DARA Expert – Presidency of the Council of Ministers, and at a regional and local level, as confirmed by Monica Bottino, G.D. Local Authorities, Mountain and Small Municipalities – Manager U.O. Development Activities in Mountain Areas, Energy Resources and Relations with the Autonomous Provinces – Lombardy Region.
