Despite the heat and the holidays, measurements in the woods are continuing for the TREE:HERO project. During the period of June and July the group of the University of Padua completed the study of the spatial structure of the Spruce woods (Picea abies), carrying out more than 30 surveys in the study areas of Vallecamonica (BS) and the Val Tovanella (BL).
Thanks to these surveys, the first data processing can be started, thus identifying the characteristics of the forest structure studied and subsequently root reinforcement.
At the end of July and in the weeks available in August, important work will begin for the Chestnut woods (Castanea sativa) in mid-Vallecamonica, while in September the focus will be on Beech woods (Fagus sylvatica). Thanks to these studies, the typical spatial structures of the three forest categories most present in our territories will be surveyed in detail, obtaining important information to be used in slope stability assessment.
The preliminary results will be presented at the XII National Congress of the Italian Society of Silviculture and Forest Ecology (SISEF) in Palermo next autumn (12-15 November).
