During the European Week of Regions and Cities, a workshop “ISLANDS, MOUNTAINS AND SPARSELY POPULATED AREAS: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES will be organized, on the 9th October, in Brussels.

The Workshop objective is to discuss the main challenges faced by islands, mountains and sparsely populated areas, in particular in the environment and energy fields, and the current and post-2020 support of the EU cohesion, environmental and energy polices to these areas, with focus on the EU Macro Regional Strategies and on the ongoing initiatives on circular economy and on clean energy for islands.

DRAFT PROGRAMME:

Welcome and introduction: Mr. Georges Kremlis, Honorary Director and Active Senior for Circular Economy in Islands, European Commission-DG Environment

Presentations:

  • Expert work “Supporting and strengthening the development of islands, mountains and sparsely populated areas through EU Cohesion Policy”: Ms. Gilda Carbone, Independent Expert
  • The EU Macro-Regional Strategies: Mr. Marco Onida, Senior Expert, European CommissionDG Regional and urban policy
  • The Clean energy for EU islands initiative: Mr. Brendan Devlin, Adviser, European Commission – DG Energy
  • The Circular Economy-Territorial Cohesion-Insularity initiative: Mr. Georges Kremlis
  • Debate: Q&A session with questions and comments from the audience moderated by Mr. Georges Kremlis
